Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- What is Your Matrilineal Line?

From Randy over at Genea-Musings:

Dear genealogists everywhere, it's Saturday Night!  Time for some Genealogy FUN.

Your mission this week, should you decide to accept it, is to:

 1) List your matrilineal line - your mother, her mother, etc. back to the first identifiable mother. Note: this line is how your mitochondrial DNA was passed to you!

2) Tell us if you have had your mitochondrial DNA tested, and if so, which Haplogroup you are in.

3) Post your responses on your own blog post, in Comments to this blog post, or in a Status line on Facebook or in your Stream at Google Plus.

4)  If you have done this before, please do your father's matrilineal line, or your grandfather's matrilineal line, or your spouse's matrilineal line.
5)  Does this list spur you to find distant cousins that might share one of your matrilineal lines?

Here's mine:

(1)  My matrilineal line:

- Mary Elizabeth Tapley (that's me!)

- Linda Irene Tapley, mother (b. Los Angeles, California)

- Ethel Irene Ranney Tapley, grandmother (b. July 6 1913 in Elsie, Clinton County, Michigan; d. Nov 12 1973 in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia)

-  Bessie Alice Carter Ranney, great-grandmother (b. Feb 9 1883 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; d. April 14 1960 in Redlands, San Bernardino County, California)  (She was adopted at birth.  I know nothing of her birth  family.)

- Sarah Melissa Schoonover, great-great-grandmother (b. July 13 1840; d. May 23 1918 in Elsie, Clinton County, Michigan)

- Sarah Ozmun, 3rd great-grandmother (b. Oct 23 1800; d. Nov 7 1870)

-  Sarah Jordan, 4th great-grandmother (b. Sept 29 1762 in New York; d. Aug 12 1812 in New York)

(2)  I have had my mitochondrial DNA tested and the Haplogroup I am in is U5a1a1.  This Haplogroup was centered in the Scandinavian countries.

(3)  Done!  ;)

(4)  Will do in another post!

(5)  I am always eager to find near and distant cousins, especially on my mother's side because I know very few on that side of the family.

Thankful Thursday: More new cousins!

While in Georgia over Labor Day, my mother and I drove to South Carolina to finally meet in person another cousin that found me through this blog.  "Ray" and I have exchanged emails and talked on the telephone numerous times, but this was the first time we had gotten together.  We had a wonderful visit and lunch.  He was also kind enough to bring many pictures to share of his side of the family.

Then as a last minute treat, Cousin Keith arranged for me to meet another new cousin the night before I returned home.  Zachariah "Zack" Claxton, Jr. and I are actually related on both sides of my family!  We are double related!  On the Tapley side, he is my 2nd cousin.  On my Schwalls side, we are 3rd cousins, 1x removed.  The Claxtons have a book entitled Henry Claxton and Descendants, 1790-1980 by George W. Norris.  This is a book I had never before seen and it actually provided some new information on my Claxton and Bush ancestors.  There was even a picture of my 2nd great-grandmother, Lincelia Claxton Schwalls!

Lincelia E. Claxton Schwalls, April 10, 1839 - January 18, 1882

Also included in this book were pictures of the headstones of my 3rd great-grandparents, Zachariah and Lincelia Bush Claxton.  I need to add the Davis (Schwalls) Cemetery in Johnson County to my list of places I want to visit!

(I know - terrible pictures.  But they are more than I had before!)

Zack and his wife were wonderful to talk with and share Tapley stories together.  We so enjoyed out visit, and I look forward to seeing them again whenever I visit Georgia next.

I am very thankful for the cousins I have found... or who have found me.   It makes tangible the search I have been pursuing all these years.

The Difference Between Johnson County Tapleys and Emanuel County Tapleys

Once upon a time, there was an independent woman named Sarah (Sally) Tapley.  She was the daughter of Newhampton (New) Tapley.  The identity of her mother is unknown.  Sally was born in South Carolina in 1775 (during the Tapley migration from North Carolina to Georgia).  When Sally's parents moved further south to what was then Washington County, Georgia but later became Montgomery County and still later Emanuel County, she came with them and spent the rest of her life in that area.

Though she never married, she gave birth to three children, all sons, two of them twins.  Through her twins, James M. Tapley and George Washington (Wash) Tapley, she wound up having many hundreds, maybe thousands, of descendants.

James M. Tapley (May 2, 1814 - August 2, 1884) lived his entire life in an area that was part of Montgomery County until Emanuel County was created in 1814.  The area remained a part of Emanuel until 1858, when it was cut off in the formation of Johnson County.  Generally called the Oaky Grove area, it now forms the northeastern corner of Johnson, near the borders of Emanuel and Washington counties.

James M. Tapley is buried in the Oaky Grove Church Cemetery:

James' descendents moved into Emanuel County and multiplied there over the next century.

George Washington (Wash) Tapley (May 2, 1814 - after 1880) is believed to have lived his entire life in the area that is now eastern Johnson County.  He is also buried at Oaky Grove, but in an unmarked grave.

Wash's descendents tended to stay in Johnson County.  This is the twin I am descended from, along with almost every one I have written about in this blog.

We (those of us who consider ourselves Johnson County Tapleys or are descended from them) call James' descendants "Emanuel County Tapleys" or "those other Tapleys."  We are all related, of course; just at more of a distance. And I know very few of them and very little about them.

So now you know the difference!

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun -- Your Family and Genealogy

From Randy over at Genea-Musings:

Dear genealogists everywhere, it's Saturday Night!  Time for some Genealogy FUN.

Your mission this week, should you decide to accept it, is to:

1)  Tell us how your family members (parents, children, grandchildren, spouse, siblings, cousins, aunts/uncles, etc.) react to your genealogy addict er, hobb, er, interests!  Do they accept it, cooperate with you, listen to your experiences and accomplishments, or not?

2)  Do you have any funny stories about your family members' interest in or with genealogy?  Tell us!

3)  Share your report in a blog post of your own, in a comment to this blog post, in a Facebook status post, or a Google+ stream post.

Here's mine:

(1)  My mother, Linda Tapley, seems to be quite interested by the finds I make.  She gamely goes along on cemetery visits, even in 100 degree weather.  She is not obsessed herself, though, and does no research herself.  She is also where I go to check facts... to confirm my memories are accurate.

My sister also does genealogy research, so she totally "gets" the obsession.  She concentrates more on her mother's side of the family and leaves the Tapley side to me.  Unfortunately due to health and distance, we have only been able to go on one research trip together.  It was fun and informative, and I wish we could do more!

Cousins:  I have cousins on every end of the spectrum.  Some that are polite and listen, but really are not interested; some that enjoy hearing the information and actually like to visit the cemeteries, but do no research on their own; and one who is even more obsessed and fanatical than I am.

(2)  The aforementioned cousin who is a Tapley genealogy fanatic pushes me to find out more and more.  I will get NUMEROUS text messages that read "Have you heard anything?" or "Have you looked at the 300+ pages of genealogy information yet that I brought you?" - two hours ago!!! Unfortunately, so far that 300+ pages is on the stack with the 50 or so legal-sized pages you brought me a year ago and the 3-ring binder of information you gave to me 5 months ago!  I will get to it before I die.  I promise.  But seriously, his texts do motivate me, and he rekindles my genealogy fire when it dies down.

(3)  Done!

Thriller Thursday: Sid Lampp and Clinton Powell

Sidney (Sid) Lampp was my father's first cousin.  His mother, Tabitha Tapley Lampp, and my father's father, Lusian Keman Tapley, were siblings.  There was a story that my father told about Sid... I heard it my entire life.  Now my cousin, Wesley, Jr., has told me a story, too.  It is similar.  I don't know if we will ever know the entire truth.  However, since when I visited Johnson County recently, I crossed a landmark that plays a big role in the story, I thought I would record the legend here.

In 1920, Sid is 18 years old and living at home with his parents as indicated in the U.S. Census:

Click on image for a larger view

In 1930, Sid is listed on the U.S. Census as a convict:

Click on image for a larger view
So what on earth happened in between?  Well, this is a meshing of the stories I've been told:

Sidney was dating or was engaged to Mamie Lou Josey.  He took Mamie, his nephew, Don, and his niece, Carolyn, to the fair.  While there, Clinton Powell, a local boy/man, either said something improper about Mamie or he made a pass at her.  Sidney took Mamie and the children home, went back to the bridge between his house (and evidently Clinton's house) and Kite, hid his buggy off the side of the road, and waited.  When Clinton came by on his way home from the fair, Sid stepped out of the trees and shot and killed him.  My father said that Sid served 8 years on the chain gang.  (Presumably he got such a light sentence because his uncle, Jim Tapley, was a sheriff's deputy in Johnson County.)  Sid and Mamie Lou did eventually get married.

Now how much of that story can I verify?  Well, we can see that Sid was on the chain gang in Washington County in 1930.  So he obviously committed a crime.  I have not obtained a copy of Sid and Mamie Lou's marriage record, so I do not know what date they actually wed.  I did, however, acquire a copy of Clinton Powell's death certificate which shows he was "Shot to Death" and died on September 8, 1926.

However, if this is the date that Sid killed Clinton, then there is no way that he took his nephew and niece to the fair then.  Don was not born until 1931 and Carolyn was born in 1927.

I also have been unable to locate any newspaper article about the incident.  That is not entirely unheard of for that era - I have tried to research another accidental shooting that occurred around this time, and there were no newspaper articles about it either.

So what is the true story?  Will we ever know?  I doubt it.  But I will keep looking.  You never know when that one piece of key information will emerge.

And here, circa 2012, is the bridge over the Little Ohoopee where it all allegedly went down:

(Also, I'm fairly certain that Clinton Powell was related to the Tapleys somehow, if only by marriage.  Thus far, I have been unable to find the link.)

Wednesday's Child: Charlie B. Schwalls

Charlie B. Schwalls
February 20, 1902 - March 31, 1908

son of
Charlie M Schwalls and Elizabeth Jane Wheeler Schwalls

laid to rest at
Wheeler Cemetery
Johnson County, Georgia

This is a perfect example of why it is such a good idea to visit cemeteries.  Before finding this headstone a couple of weeks ago, I never knew about this child.  I had seen the grave referenced before, but the wrong parents were listed, so I never put it together that this was a child of Charlie M (C.M.) Schwalls.

Charlie B. Schwalls was my first cousin, twice removed.

A visit to my roots

Ashamedly, I admit I have neglected this blog.  My only excuse is that life got in the way.  Moving for the second time in a year, taking a new (very busy) full-time job, and just trying to adjust to being on my own all conspired to keep me away from my hobbies.

However, a visit to Georgia over Labor Day has motivated me to get back to genealogy and studying my family's history.

My cousin, Keith Tapley, is very interested in the history and origins of the Tapley family.  He had never visited the place where it all began... in Georgia anyway... Johnson County.  So on the Sunday before Labor Day, Keith, my mother, and I headed south from Augusta.  We began with a visit to our cousin, Bennett Wesley Tapley, Jr.  Wesley Jr. knows everyone in Johnson County and most of the people in Jefferson and Emanuel Counties.  He listened and absorbed all the stories his father, grandfather, and other old-timers told while sitting around under the shade tree in the backyard.  He is a great resource on many things Tapley.  Keith had not met him before.

Bennett Wesley Tapley Jr and Keith Tapley, September 2, 2012, Kite, Georgia

After sharing a few stories and pictures with Wesley Jr., we proceeded to Minton's Chapel Advent Christian Church Cemetery in Tom.  That is where Keith's great grandparents, Franklin Morgan Tapley and Lainey Minton Tapley, are buried.

Next, we visited the Wheeler Cemetery just outside Kite and the Poplar Springs Methodist Church Cemetery just outside of Adrian.  These cemetery visits were strictly for me and not necessarily of interest to Keith.  On my mother's side, I am descended from the Schwalls and several members of that family are buried at the Wheeler Cemetery.  (I will share pictures in future posts.)  In addition, the Wheelers and the Tapleys intermarried several times.  I have been meaning to visit there.  My Drake ancestors are buried at Poplar Springs.  I have been wanting to go there for years and finally got the chance this trip.  However, have I mentioned it was 100 degrees the day we were there?  It was so hot that my poor dog, Daisy, would not even get out of the car at Poplar Springs.  She has learned that cemeteries tend to have few trees for shade.  Because of the heat, I didn't take as many pictures as I would have liked at Poplar Springs.  I will just have to go back!

After visiting Wesley Jr. one more time, I took Keith and showed him where his great-great grandparents (my great-grandparents, James Madison (Jim) and Rebecca Page Tapley) lived.  Then we rode dirt roads past Fortner's Pond, which is where the Tapley land was originally.  It was a long day, and I am sure we overloaded Keith with information.  But it was so satisfying to reconnect with our roots.  To walk where our ancestors walked, to drive the roads where they probably rode their horses and buggies, and to visit their final resting places to read the names and make the connections.

Keith at the old homeplace of our ancestors, Jim & Rebecca Tapley

This might be a good time to map the relationship between Keith and myself:

- James Madison (Jim) and Rebecca Page Tapley... among their children:
  -- Franklin Morgan Tapley
  -- Lucian Keman Tapley

Franklin Morgan and Lainey Minton Tapley... among their children:
  --- Homer Frank Tapley

Homer Frank Tapley... among his children:
   --- Homer Frank Tapley, Jr.

Homer Frank Tapley, Jr.... among his children:
  ---- Keith Tapley

Then...

Lucian Keman and Nealie Drake Tapley... among their children:
  -- Gilbert Tapley

Gilbert Tapley... among his children:
   --- Me!!

So Keith and I are second cousins, once removed.

Keith found me last year through this blog.  I got lucky when I got him for a cousin!
