Grandma's 1934 Diary, Weeks 6 and 7

Alice is her sister.
Kenneth is her brother.
Her parents.
H = her boyfriend, Hazel Avery Plumlee
Delma = Hazel's little sister
Earl = Hazel's brother
Verda = Earl's wife
Dorothy Lee = Hazel's niece (Earl's child)
Otho is Otho Hesser, her father's cousin.
Viella is Mary Viella Crites Hesser, Otho's wife.
Ruth & Kathryn are Otho and Viella's daughters.
Uncle Jont is Jonathan Hesser, Otho's father and her father's uncle.
Aunt Kate is Sarah Katherine Hall Hesser, Jonathan's wife and Otho's mother
Herman (Williams) is Alice's husband.

Kenneth's (soon-to-be-ex) wife is also named Alice; her maiden name is unknown.


Sunday, February 4:  "Right after lunch dad & I came home.  The points stuck & we had quite a time getting home.  Hazel bout M.T. Ford.  He & Ben came over.  H. stayed all night."


Monday, February 5:  "Hazel moved into his house.  I took the car to school.  Dad worked on the C.W.A.  I saw Hazel in the evening.  I had H's lights turned on."


Tuesday, February 6:  "Dad worked on the C.W.A.  I went to school.  I didn't feel very well today.  Hazel came over in the evening."


Wednesday, February 7:  "I took the car to school.  I got H. at noon & we went to Berdo. & filed our intentions.  H. stayed for supper."


Thursday, February 8:  "I went to school.  I am kind of excited.  Hazel came over in the evening.  I went to Yucaipa with him.  Dorothy & Charlie came over."


Friday, February 9:  "I went to school.  Everyone saw it in the paper.  Congratulations from every side."


Saturday, February 10:  "I went to town picked Dorothy Pate up & she went to Berdo with me after my license.  I washed in the afternoon.  Saw Hazel in the evening."


Sunday, February 11:  "Hazel stayed all night last night.  Ben & him were here for dinner.  Hazel & I got married at Judge Richardsons at 1 o'k.  We went to Elmonte to see Delma & went to show."

 Monday, February 12:  "I went to school.  Everyone asked me how I felt.  Hazel came over in the evening & we moved my things over there."


Tuesday, February 13:  "I went to school.  Dad worked on the C.W.A.  He is getting 24 hrs. this week.  Hazel stayed all night with us."


Wednesday, February 14:  "I went to school.  Dad worked on the C.W.A.  I saw Hazel in the evening."


Thursday, February 15:  "I stayed all night with Hazel last night.  I cleaned his house & finished unpacking all my things.  Came home about 6:30."


Friday, February 16:  "I went to school.  I took the car down & bought supplies.  Came home about 2:00.  Harry & Lizzie came calling.  Hazel here in evening.  I stayed all night with him."

Saturday, February 17:  "I came home & did a big washing.  Took car & had muffler welded.  In evening Hazel & Dad & I went to the Orange Show."

I have no idea why my grandmother would have chosen to get married while her mother was out of town!  I guess that is the reason she continued to go back "home" - to her parents' house - to care for her father in her mother's absence. By today's standards, it is all very strange.  It would seem unconventional for the time, also. We'll see how long the separate living arrangements continue.  From this point on, she writes sporadically in her 1934 diary.
