    Today, we are going to revisit the life of my grand aunt Tabitha 'Bosh' Tapley Lampp (1875-1956) since I just finished updating the family tree with new information about her descendants.

The Pacific

Spanish-American War. Revolts in Cuba against the Spanish had been closely watched by the Americans and with the sinking of the battleship Maine in Havana harbor, the war broke out between Spain and the United States. The war was primarily fought in Cuba, the Caribbean and the Pacific. The Treaty of Paris was signed in August of 1898 in which the U.S. gained temporary control of Cuba, and colonial authority over Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines for a payment of $20 million to the Spanish.

Atlantic Ocean

RMS Titanic Disaster. The RMS Titanic was the largest passenger steam ship of the time. The ship was built using the most modern technology and was largely thought of as unsinkable. The Titanic left on its maiden voyage on April 10. One the night of April 14, shortly before midnight, the Titanic hit an iceberg; it sank a short 2 hours and 40 minutes later. 1,517 of the 2,223 people on board the ship were killed, due to the lack of lifeboats available, making the sinking of the Titanic one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

World War I begins. This was a conflict involving most of the world’s powers. The beginning of the war was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Fran Ferdinand of Austria Hungary. The world quickly formed into alliances, The Allied Powers (United Kingdom, France, The Russian Empire, and later the United States) fought against the Central Powers (The German Empire, The Austro-Hungarian Empire, The Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Bulgaria). Over 70 million military personnel fought in the war including 60 million Europeans. The Western Front consisted of a trench line that changed little until 1917. More than 15 million people were killed; making World War I one of the deadliest conflicts in history.

19th Amendment ratified (U.S. women gain right to vote). Women’s suffrage in the U.S. began in the mid-nineteenth century, with protests and marches. In the summer of 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was passed making it possible for women to vote in national elections. 1920 marked the first time women were able to vote at a national level.

The depression varied in countries around the world but generally started in 1929 and lasted until the beginning of World War II. Unemployment rose to 25% in the U.S. and as high as 33% in other countries. The Great Depression was the largest economic downturn in history.

The Holocaust. The Holocaust refers to the systematic genocide of over 6 million European Jews by Nazi Germany. The genocide began in stages in the early 1930’s by removing Jews from society; moving the Jews to concentration camps, where they died of slave labor and disease; moving Jews to ghettos; mass shootings in conquered territories; and finally extermination camps where most Jews who survived the journey were killed in gas chambers.

The Dust Bowl. The Dust Bowl was a period of repeating destructive dust storms in the southern plains of the U.S.  The dust storms were caused by severe drought that occurred after years of deep plowing which took away the grassy ground cover that previously held the soil in place. Once exposed, the soil was dried and whipped by terrific winds creating billowing clouds of dust to the skies. Because of the physical and economic effects of the storms, hundreds of thousands of people were forced to leave their homes to seek a better life elsewhere.

The Pacific

World War II begins.  The war began  on September 1, 1939 with the German invasion of Poland. The war involved most of the world’s powers and was divided into two sides: the Allies versus the Axis. World War II changed the boundaries of war with significant actions against civilians including the Holocaust and the only use of nuclear weapons in war. 100 million military personnel were involved in the conflict. World War II was the deadliest war in history with over 70 million casualties. The war ended in 1945 with the victory of The Allies.

Attack on Pearl Harbor. The attack on Pearl Harbor was an attack by the Japanese Navy on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The attack by the Empire of Japan was intended to stop the U.S. from intervening in the war they were planning in Southeast Asia. Four U.S. Navy battleships sunk during the attack. Three cruisers, 3 destroyers, one minelayer, and one anti-aircraft training ship were also sunk or damaged during the attack. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed, 2,402 personnel were killed and 1,282 personnel were wounded during the attack. The U.S. declared war on the Empire of Japan after this attack, after which Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. This propelled the United States into the European theater during World War II.

Japan

Nuclear Bombings. Only two nuclear bombs have ever been used offensively during war. The first was detonated on the city of Hiroshima, Japan near the end of World War II. The second was detonated on the city of Nagasaki 3 days later. The bombings resulted in the immediate deaths of approximately 110,000 people, mostly civilians, and the eventual deaths of many more due to injury, acute radiation sickness, and ionizing radiation.

The Korean War began with the invasion of South Korea by North Korea. The war ended when an armistice was signed designating the 38th parallel as the demilitarized zone.
