Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - How Many Ancestors Have You "Met"?

time for more Genealogy Fun!!!

Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to:

(1)  Write down which of your ancestors that you have met in person (yes, even if you were too young to remember them).

(2)  Tell us their names, where they lived, and their relationship to you in your own blog post, in a comment to this blog post, or in a post on Facebook. 

Here's mine:

(1)  Linda Irene Tapley (1942-), my mother, resides in Augusta, Georgia.  She was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up around Redlands and Yucaipa, California.  She came east in 1962 and lived in Tallahassee and Jacksonville, Florida.  She has also lived in Swainsboro and Milledgeville/Eatonton, Georgia during her lifetime.  

(2)  Gilbert Earl Tapley (1928-2008), my father, resided all over Johnson County and a time in Jefferson County, Georgia during his childhood; in Milledgeville, Georgia a couple of times; in Jacksonville, Florida several different times; and in Augusta, Georgia at least two different times, which is where he passed away.

(3)  Charles Morgan Tapley (1907-1973), my maternal grandfather, born in Johnson County, Georgia; ran away at age 16 to join the Navy, ended up stationed in California and lived there until about 1962; lived in Tallahassee, Florida a couple of years; then settled in Swainsboro, Georgia, where he lived until his death (1964-1973).

(4)  Ethel Irene Ranney Tapley (1913-1973), my maternal grandmother, born in Elsie, Michigan; moved to the San Bernardino and Redlands area of California as a child; also lived in both Los Angeles and Yucaipa for periods of time as an adult; moved to Tallahassee Florida in 1962; moved to Swainsboro, Georgia in 1964 and lived there until her death.

(5) Nealie Vermell Drake Tapley (1895-1970), my paternal grandmother, born in Adrian, Emanuel County, Georgia; lived all over Emanuel (Adrian), Johnson (Kite), Washington (Sandersville), Jefferson (Wadley), and Richmond (Augusta) Counties during the course of her life; also lived in Jacksonville, Florida.  She had returned to Augusta and was living there when she died.

So I have only "met" five my my direct ancestors.  That is a very low number, I think.  I never had the chance to meet my paternal grandfather, Lusion Keman Tapley, or any of my great-grandparents.  I didn't even have any grandparents left after age 6.  I think I got a little cheated.  

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks (Week 5): So Far Away

Amy Johnson Crow from Generations Cafe is hosting a blog writing prompt this year called 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks.  Since I need a swift kick in the you-know-what to get me blogging more regularly again, I thought I'd jump in.  I like that she gives us "permission" to interpret the prompt however we wish and share it however we wish.  It doesn't have to be a blog post; it could be a family video, a letter to a child or grandchild, an e-mail, etc.  I'm actually jumping back a week to address the prompt "So Far Away."

In 1906, my great-grandfather, Luther Boardman Ranney, and my great-grandmother, Bessie Alice Carter, were wed.  They lived in Elsie, Clinton County, Michigan.  They had their first child in December of 1907, but unfortunately he only lived 4 days.  However, they went on to have three more children:  Kenneth, born in 1909, Alice, born in 1911, and Ethel (my grandmother), born in 1913.  They seemed to have a normal, fun childhood. 

 

Then, when Alice was 9 years old, about 1920, the doctor told her parents that she had tuberculosis (TB).  He went on to tell them that Alice would not make it through another Michigan winter.  She needed a warmer climate.

So almost immediately, it appears, the family packed up and moved across the country to Redlands, California.  Why there?  We don't know for sure, but I believe it was because Luther's Uncle Jonathan Hesser (his mother's brother), his wife, Kate, and their son, Otho, along with his wife, Viella, moved out there about the same time.  I'm not sure who followed who.  It looks like Viella was from Yucaipa, California, right up the road from Redlands.  Perhaps she suggested that would be a good area?  Or perhaps the train stopped at the station in San Bernardino (again, right up the road from Redlands and Yucaipa) and they thought the area looked good. 

How much courage it must have taken to move across the country, especially at that time!  The roads were not good and car tires went flat constantly.  I would imagine cars weren't dependable at all that early on.  Or perhaps they took a train.  That would be a challenge in and of itself.  How do you carry everything you own for 5 people onto a train?! 

Then there's the fact that they left everything they knew... their home, family, friends, church... to start over where they knew no one, but an uncle, aunt and cousin.  And Bessie didn't even know them.  The Hessers had lived in Ohio so she had not met them before.  Bessie's parents had passed away by 1920 and she was an only child, so the only family she had were her husband and children.  Luther, however, had three siblings and their families that he probably never saw again.  His parents both died the fall of 1920, so did the family move before or after their deaths?  That would have been incredibly difficult for everyone either way. 

However, just like any other parents in the world, if a doctor tells you that your child will die if you do not get her to a warmer climate... then you move heaven, earth, trains, and automobiles to get her there.

Sunday, February 10, 1929:  "Very cold, the men didn't get home until after 7 A.M.  Alice & I took L. back to Bruce's to fill smudge pots.  Called on the way home at Pences for Ethel.  First time I was in their house.  Kenneth slept all day & sat up until nearly 2 to study at night.  Ethel got Bruce's & L. & bro't them here for my birthday dinner the girls got for me.  We went up to see Mona Espy at hospital.  She had operation for appendicitis.  Then went to Vespers and afterwards took Nora home.  Came home & got lunch & Alice & I went to Church."

Monday, February 11, 1929:  "Washed & did part of the ironing.  Worked hard all day.  The girls & I went up town when L. got home from Bruce's where he worked."

Tuesday, February 12, 1929:  "Viella Hesser was here for dinner.  Luther got home from Bruce's at 7 A.M. & then picked oranges.  Got a check from Mrs. Woessner for $10.  Viella asked me to go to P.T.A. meeting at Yucaipa with here so I did then went home with here & the girls came after me.  We had a real nice supper, birthday for me they said & came home."

Wednesday, February 13, 1929:  "Went up to the regular monthly Ladies' Aid meeting and dinner.  After dinner I met Bruce's at Albert's store and they took me to Velora Weaver's to Mother's Club.  We had a fine time.  Alice went to H. S. Dept. banquet.  Lucille was here awhile in the eve."

Thursday, February 14, 1929:  "Worked all day.  Fixed Ethel's tan silk dress.  Called on Mrs. Dickerson.  Stayed at Woessner's in the evening while they went to the Orange Show.
  Nora Livengood's baby was born.  Ordered flowers sent her.  Went over to wash P.T.A. dishes at Kingsbury, called at Mrs. Dickerson's & found school house closed when I got back."

Friday, February 15, 1929:  "Stayed home and worked on Ethel's green & tan dress.  The girls got a marcel and they with Kenneth went to the Orange Show.  I stayed at Woessener's until 11:15."

Saturday, February 16, 1929:  "Girls cleaned up the house and I baked some.  Mr. Hill, Capistrano Beach man, called.  Went down town when L. got home and got Kenneth some shoes.  We were at Hammond's awhile in the forenoon.  The girls and I went to the makio program in the evening."

Thursday, March 29:  "I washed at Trowbridges.  Took Mrs. Trowbridges to Yucaipa in the afternoon.  Hazel & I were there to supper, had ice cream."

Friday, March 30:  "I went to town.  Clara waved my hair.  Made some ice cream there.  Hazel came over after work we went to Yucaipa in the evening."

Wednesday, February 7:  "I took the car to school.  I got H. at noon & we went to Berdo. & filed our intentions.  H. stayed for supper."


Thursday, February 8:  "I went to school.  I am kind of excited.  Hazel came over in the evening.  I went to Yucaipa with him.  Dorothy & Charlie came over."


Friday, February 9:  "I went to school.  Everyone saw it in the paper.  Congratulations from every side."


Saturday, February 10:  "I went to town picked Dorothy Pate up & she went to Berdo with me after my license.  I washed in the afternoon.  Saw Hazel in the evening."


Sunday, February 11:  "Hazel stayed all night last night.  Ben & him were here for dinner.  Hazel & I got married at Judge Richardsons at 1 o'k.  We went to Elmonte to see Delma & went to show."

 Monday, February 12:  "I went to school.  Everyone asked me how I felt.  Hazel came over in the evening & we moved my things over there."


Tuesday, February 13:  "I went to school.  Dad worked on the C.W.A.  He is getting 24 hrs. this week.  Hazel stayed all night with us."

Wednesday, February 14:  "I went to school.  Dad worked on the C.W.A.  I saw Hazel in the evening."


Thursday, February 15:  "I stayed all night with Hazel last night.  I cleaned his house & finished unpacking all my things.  Came home about 6:30."


Friday, February 16:  "I went to school.  I took the car down & bought supplies.  Came home about 2:00.  Harry & Lizzie came calling.  Hazel here in evening.  I stayed all night with him."

Saturday, February 17:  "I came home & did a big washing.  Took car & had muffler welded.  In evening Hazel & Dad & I went to the Orange Show."

I have no idea why my grandmother would have chosen to get married while her mother was out of town!  I guess that is the reason she continued to go back "home" - to her parents' house - to care for her father in her mother's absence. By today's standards, it is all very strange.  It would seem unconventional for the time, also. We'll see how long the separate living arrangements continue.  From this point on, she writes sporadically in her 1934 diary.

Friday, January 12:  "I went to school.  Dad worked on C.W.A.  Kenneth cabled up for me to come after him.  Met Hazel at Mentone.  Got Kenneth in Redlands."

Saturday, January 13:  "Dad worked on the C.W.A.  Kenneth took a long hike.  Mama & I made my blue tweed dress.  Hazel & I went to town in the evening."

 Tuesday, December 26:  "Dad worked on the C.W.A.  Mama & I had a big washing.  We tried to clean house.  Went to Yucaipa in the evening."

Wednesday, December 27:  "We did a big ironing.  I read all afternoon.  Dad plowed."

Thursday, December 28:  "Mama & I went to town.  Had dinner at Livingoods.  Took Mrs. Harmon to town.  Got our interest.  Went to Hesser's but they weren't home."

Friday, December 29:  "Dad worked on the C.W.A.  I walked to Shultzs & mailed Hazel & Alice a letter.  Mama made me a print dress."

Saturday, December 30:  "Dad worked again, until noon as it rained.  Dad & I went to Yucaipa.  Read all evening."

Sunday, December 31:  "It is still raining.  Mr. Cooper called.  Kinghams came up & re-rented the house.  Read most of the day."

This concludes my grandmother's 1933 diary.  Thank you for sticking with me as I recorded her thoughts over that year of her life.  She did make entries in 1934, but only sporadically after the first couple of months of the year.  I will continue to share her writings during 2012.

** "The Civil Works Administration was established by the New Deal during the Great Depression to create manual labor jobs for millions of unemployed. The jobs were merely temporary, for the duration of the hard winter."  "President Franklin D. Roosevelt unveiled the CWA on November 8, 1933.

The CWA was a project created under the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA). The CWA created construction jobs, mainly improving or constructing buildings and bridges. It ended on March 31, 1934, after spending $200 million a month and giving jobs to 4 million people."
